Workplace Wiki a Wakeup For Book-Smart niversity Grads
The University of Technology, Sydney, has developed the UTS Work-Ready Project, a new wiki intended to help better prepare university graduates for the workforce. Work-Ready Project leader Andrew Litchfield says government and professional bodies have been asking universities to better prepare graduates for the workforce for years. "So it raises the question: Should university education focus on learning the body of knowledge of a profession? Maybe it should also be about learning the attributes in the context of a profession," Litchfield says.
The wiki is an online collaboration of professionally-contextualized learning activities intended to assist academics with the development and implementation of work-ready learning activities and subjects. Project researchers worked with professional societies to identify 11 professional work-ready attributes: ethics and professionalism; global and local perspectives; information literacy and management; initiative, enterprise and creativity; planning and organizing; problem solving and critical thinking; research; self-management and life-long learning; teamwork and leadership; and technology literacy.
The wiki has more than 300 learning activities, each designed to take 50 minutes within a tutorial or laboratory class, providing enough information to allow academics to choose specific attributes and disciplines that are most appropriate for their students.
