Chief information officers (CIOs) in 2020 had to reprioritize corporate demands and establish new boundaries to prevent team burnout due to remote employment work and the ramp-up of certain digital projects.
Many CIOs also helped spearhead their companies' expedited digital transformation initiatives to satisfy maturing customer demands following the pandemic.
An executive survey by consulting firm McKinsey & Co. found Covid-19 accelerated such efforts by three to four years.
Examples include Target's headquarters workforce becoming fully remote in March, with its information technology (IT) team helping to set up roughly 15,000 workers in their homes; Target also deprioritized any initiatives that did not support store and digital service operations.
CIO Meerah Rajavel at software firm Citrix Systems said the pandemic has highlighted IT teams' essential role in maintaining business continuity, and emphasized the crucial need for flexibility to ensure a healthy work-life balance.
