The Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC), announced during the 2021 CES show, will be a spec race with mechanically identical cars, and software that each team hopes will give it a competitive edge.

The IAC car will feature a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a chassis modified with sensors and controls so it can operate autonomously.

A team from Clemson University will integrate the sensors, which will be provided by series sponsors.

A qualifying race will be held in May during the Indy 500 weekend, with the actual race slated for Oct. 23.

Several dozen teams from engineering schools across the globe are expected to participate.

The winning team will receive a $1-million prize, with another $500,000 in prizes earmarked for winners of simulation races and hackathons.
