South Korean broadcaster SBS plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) to "resurrect" deceased folk singer Kim Kwang-seok for a new AI vs. human competition.
SBS's Nam Sang-moon was inspired by AI vs. human competitions in the ancient strategy game of Go, with champion Lee Se-dol winning one of three matches against the AI program HanDol, and one out of five matches with DeepMind's AlphaGo program.
The South Korean startup Supertone is behind Kim's reincarnated voice, with its Singing Voice Synthesis technology able to learn voices by listening to multiple songs with corresponding notes and lyrics.
The revival of deceased singers using AI and holograms raises ethical and copyright issues. Lawyer Ko Hwan-kyoung said, "What's interesting about AI is that it's evolving to a level where it can write and compose by studying data. Are we going to acknowledge AI as a legal entity with legal personality like humans, and grant copyright?"
