Children Less Likely to Catch, Spread COVID-19, Modeling Shows

Children have a lower risk for COVID-19 and are less likely to spread the virus, a study found.

Simulations of COVID-19 transmission within households conducted by researchers at Israel's University of Haifa (UOH) found that persons 20 years and younger have less coronavirus in their bodies and were 43% as "susceptible" to the virus compared to those older than 20.

The team applied mathematical and statistical models of virus transmission to a dataset of COVID-19 test results from the Israeli city of Bnei Brak, covering 637 households. The UOH researchers said the outcomes likely indicate that children are at lower risk for spreading the virus. This may explain why children are more likely than adults to test negative despite being infected, and why fewer children receive a COVID-19 diagnosis than adults.

The UOH scientists said these results could inform decisions on opening schools amid the pandemic.
