Using Mathematical Models to Enable Transportation Decarbonization, Combat Climate Change

 Researchers attached GPS data loggers to buses in Mexico City and Len, Mexico.

A National Renewable Energy Laboratory study assessing the electrification potential of transit fleets in two Mexican cities determined that at least 80% of operational bus days on the studied routes were suitable for electrification.

An analysis of transit fleets in two Mexican cities by researchers at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) revealed that 80% of operational bus days for studied routes in Mexico City and León were suitable for electric buses.

The researchers attached GPS data loggers to buses and used the data to develop a mathematical model of electric buses.

They determined that both cities could switch to battery-electric buses to lower CO2 emissions and increase diesel-equivalent fuel economy.

NREL's Andrew Kotz said, "Because GPS data is nearly universal, the tools used in this research can help inform decisions about electrifying transit buses at scale across the globe.

"Using GPS loggers to gather information about transit patterns is a relatively inexpensive way to open the doors for opportunity and understanding. Having such data helps mitigate the equity issues between richer and poorer countries trying to find clean energy solutions."
