Northwestern University researchers used artificial intelligence to assess pain levels in patients with sickle cell disease, based on their vital signs.
The researchers sought to develop a system to assess pain levels in an objective manner using physiological data like body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure.
They used data from 46 patients over a combined total of 105 hospital stays to develop machine learning models that gauge pain levels and identify any changes.
The new models outperformed existing models that assess pain levels without using physiological measurements.
Northwestern's Daniel Abrams said the research could be especially useful for children, who often struggle to explain the level of pain they experience.
