IBM's First Private Sector On-Premise Quantum Computer is Going to Research Lab

The Ohio-based Cleveland Clinic will use state-of-the-art IBM technology to support a new global center for research on pathogens and human health.

IBM has forged a 10-year partnership with Cleveland Clinic to deploy a quantum computer at a new research center for researching viral pathogens, virus-induced diseases, genomics, immunology, and immunotherapies.

This will be IBM's first private-sector on-premise quantum hardware deployment, which is expected to house between 50 and 100 quantum bits (qubits), while another system surpassing 1,000 qubits eventually will be implemented there.

IBM will allow Clinic researchers to access tools like Deep Search, which can quickly process and analyze structured and unstructured data, and the IBM Functional Genomics Platform, a continuously updated cloud repository.

The company also has designed a Discovery Accelerator to help scientists prepare for emerging pathogens by offering the latest capabilities to support data-based scientific work and expedite the discovery of new therapies.

IBM's Anthony Annunziata said, "The near-term focus items will be getting ready for large-scale systems, understanding the techniques, and how they fit into their scientific workflows."
