Israel's Operation Against Hamas Was the World's First AI War

The Isreali Defense Forces used artificial intelligence and supercomputing during their last conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Israel's military is calling its recent campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip the world's first artificial intelligence (AI) war.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) struck against Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad targets using an AI platform that centralized all data on Gaza-based terrorist groups onto one system, to facilitate analysis and extraction of intelligence.

In addition, soldiers in the Intelligence Corps' elite Unit 8200 crafted algorithms and code for new programs that were used in the fighting.

One such program, Gospel, applied AI to produce recommendations for troops in the research division of Military Intelligence, who employed them to identify targets for the Israeli Air Force.

The Israeli military thinks AI helped shorten the campaign through its speed and efficacy in identifying targets.
