Army Ants, a youth robotics team from Columbia, MO, won the 2021 Global Innovation Design Award in the FIRST Robotics Competition for a smart compression stocking.

The stocking, called the Sensor Platform for Orthopedic Compliance after Knee Surgery (SPOCKS), uses sensors to measure quadricep activation, range of motion, and weight bearing to help people meet recovery goals following knee replacement surgery.

It features an inertial measuring unit with an accelerometer to measure rotation and a gyroscope to measure motion, and a second sensor to measure how much weight is put on the knee.

The stocking connects to an app via Bluetooth to track the wearer's activity.

University of Missouri's Kevin Gillis, one of the team's adult mentors, said the award puts Army Ants among the top six robotics teams in the world.
