Researchers at Austria's Graz University of Technology (TU Graz), the Medical University of Graz, and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center have developed the world's first computer model of a cancer cell, which could revolutionize cancer research.
The researchers were the first to center their study on the specific electrophysiological properties of non-excitable cancer cells.
Using the human lung adenocarcinoma cell line A549, the model simulates the rhythmic oscillation of a cancer cell's membrane potential during the transition between cell phases. It also can predict changes in membrane potential produced by drugs that turn selected ion channels on and off.
TU Graz's Christian Baumgartner said, "We get information about the effects of targeted interventions on the cancer cell."
