From Satellite to Smartphone, App Warns Public of Unsafe Water

The CholeraMap smartphone app creates early-warning risk maps based on environmental conditions derived from satellite observations. The risks are communicated to the smartphones of villagers in Bangladesh, who had input in the design of the app.

Researchers at the University of Rhode Island (URI), Moravian College, Pennsylvania State University, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University developed a smartphone application to provide early warnings of cholera contamination in water.

The CholeraMap app draws risk maps based on environmental conditions in U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration satellite images.

Risks are relayed to the smartphones of villagers in Bangladesh, who contributed to CholeraMap's design.

The app displays a color-coded map that pinpoints cholera hotspots based on satellite-derived environmental data; rates hotspots as low-, medium-, or high-risk; and provides recommendations for staying safe, based on risk levels.
