Some student-athletes and coaches at Eatonville High School in Eatonville, WA, are being required to wear proximity monitors to trace potential COVID-19 exposure regardless of their vaccination status.

The devices are required for those participating in high-contact and moderate indoor sports, including football, and will be worn only while players are on the field.

Sensors in the devices track a person's distance to another device wearer and how long they are in close proximity.

Those not in contact with a player who has tested positive can continue to play.

Superintendent Gary Neal told parents in a letter that the devices will prevent unnecessary removal of students from class and sports.

Similar devices are being used by the NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball.
