Professor Helps Achieve Quantum Computing Breakthrough

University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) professor R. Tyler Sutherland formulated a theory underlying the most accurate entangling gate ever demonstrated without lasers, a world record for quantum computing innovation. He said a two-quantum bit (qubit) entangling gate enables an operation on the secondary qubit that is conditioned on the first qubit's state.

Sutherland also said this alternative gate eliminates expensive laser gates and calibration by using microwaves that have laser-level accuracy. He added that his research intends "to increase human control over quantum mechanics. Giving people power over a different part of nature hands them a new toolkit. What they will eventually build with it is uncertain."
