A new amplifier engineered by researchers at Sweden's Chalmers University of Technology promises to revolutionize space and fiber communications.
The compact, high-performance amplifier can integrate into a millimeter-size chip, and does not produce excess noise thanks to the Kerr effect.
The device's performance levels assure more sparing installation, making it more cost effective. They also function in a continuous wave operation rather than a pulsed operation.
Chalmers' Peter Andrekson said, "This amplifier shows unprecedented performance. We consider this to be an important step towards practical use, not only in communication, but in areas including quantum computers, various sensor systems, and in metrology when making atmospheric measurements from satellites for Earth monitoring."
