NASA Challenges Students to Design Moon-Digging Robots

The competition asks students to design a robot that digs and moves lunar soil from an area of the lunar South Pole to a holding container near where astronauts may explore in the future.

The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has launched the Lunabotics Junior Contest, offering students in grades K-12 the opportunity to design lunar excavating robots.

NASA and contest organizer Future Engineers are challenging private, public, and home-schooled students to design robots that dig and transport soil from a lunar South Polar region to a container near the future Artemis astronaut mission site.

Participants must submit design images and written operational summaries for a robot no bigger than 3.5 feet x 2 feet x 2 feet.

Said NASA's Mike Kincaid, "Extracting resources in deep space will require innovation and creativity, and students are some of the most creative thinkers."
