A team led by researchers at the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) combined microscopy, biochemistry, and artificial intelligence to identify previously unknown components of human cells.
The Multi-Scale Integrated Cell (MuSIC) technique uses deep learning to map cells from cellular microscopy images.
Using MuSIC, the researchers identified about 70 components in a human kidney cell line, half of which had never been seen before.
Said UC San Diego's Yue Qin, "The combination of these technologies is unique and powerful because it's the first time measurements at vastly different scales have been brought together."
