Amazon Helping Researchers Study How to Dim the Sun
The project could offer a new way forward for how the climate is modeled.

Amazon Web Services has donated cloud computing time to help climate scientists create simulations of the Earth from 2035 to 2070, including one where the sun is artificially dimmed so less energy is trapped by greenhouse gases.
The project, in partnership with the National Center for Atmospheric Research and solar radiation management research nonprofit SilverLinings, could improve climate modeling and broaden climate models' accessibility to researchers, policymakers, and citizens.
Reliance on cloud computing rather than supercomputers could augment climate models' dataset integration, and could reduce modifications needed to run different models.
"Cloud computing has started to reach the point where it could contemplate supporting workloads like this," said SilverLining's Kelly Wanser. "And so you have this inflection point where the underlying technology is sophisticated enough, and so the question is, can you break the adoption impasse and see if you can get this stuff running on the cloud?"
