Texas-based teenager Archer Calder created a Web-based application to give his sister Della, who has a speech-inhibiting genetic disorder, the means to communicate.

The Freespeech Website is accessible from any device with Internet access, and users can program buttons with images to represent words, which are spoken out loud when clicked. Freespeech's buttons, unlike many augmentative and alternative communications apps, are easily edited, and Archer made the app free to use on the GitHub code-hosting platform.

GitHub helped Archer network with other programmers, who have contributed code to add different features to Freespeech.
