Many believe mainstream use of the metaverse will be realized only when big, cumbersome augmented reality headsets that completely cover the eyes are replaced by lightweight eyeglasses able to layer digital images onto what is seen in the real world.
Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Meta are among the major technology companies working on such technologies.
However, experts predict that it could take a decade or more to perfect the technology.
Intel's Jerry Bautista said the company shut down its smart-glasses project in 2018 due to its inability to answer many questions surrounding the technology.
Its patents were purchased by the startup North, which was acquired by Google last year.
Bautista said, "The hardware is not the hard part. The business models are not the hard part. Finding ways these devices can be used is not the hard part. The hard part is: What happens if the data leaks out?"
