The free Forecasting African STorms Application (FASTA) enables users to access real-time maps of local storm activity on their mobile phones.
Developed by researchers at the U.K.'s University of Leeds and National Center for Atmospheric Science, in collaboration with the Kenya Meteorological Department, FASTA leverages nowcasting methods, which allow meteorologists to provide accurate forecasts of storms unfolding in a matter of hours.
FASTA utilizes satellite data from EUMETSAT, the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate, and the environment, to predict storm behavior.
Users will be able to employ FASTA-supplied information to plan for impending extreme weather in order to preserve lives and livelihoods.
