Numerous Seattle-area drivers with 2014 to 2017 model Mazdas are finding that the HD Radio in their vehicles' infotainment centers will only play KUOW 94.9 FM, the National Public Radio station.
This issue prevents drivers from changing the station and from accessing Bluetooth, navigation, the clock, vehicle stats, and other infotainment center features.
Mazda of Olympia's Lorenzo Pieruccioni said the vehicles' Connectivity Master Units (CMUs), which cost about $1,500 and control video and audio signals to the vehicles' infotainment systems, are corrupted.
Mazda headquarters reported that the problem arose from KUOW sending image files with no extension.
Eastern Washington University's Dan Tappan said these files could include album covers and other images to "improve the experience."
Tappan said the file did not identify its format, and the computer in the cars should not have opened it.
