Deepfake Democracy: South Korean Candidate Goes Virtual for Votes

South Korean researchers have used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to create what is believed to be the world's first official deepfake political candidate.
The digital avatar, called "AI Yoon," looks almost identical to the People Power Party's Yoon Suk-yeol and is based on 20 hours of audio and video footage of the candidate, who recorded more than 3,000 sentences for the researchers.
Seven million people have visited the "Wiki Yoon" site to ask the avatar questions.
The researchers equipped AI Yoon with humorous and satirical answers, written by his campaign team, in order to better engage with younger voters.
Seoul Women's University's Kim Myuhng-joo said the language used by AI Yoon draws from that used in online gaming.
However, the strategy appears to be working, with polling showing that Yoon has pulled ahead of rival Lee Jae-myung with voters in their 20s.
