An algorithm developed by physicists at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) can quantify entanglement entropy, bringing us a step closer to the realization of quantum materials.

The researchers formulated a new, more-efficient algorithm of the Monte Carlo technique used by scientists to measure the Renyi entanglement entropy of objects.

The tool measured this entropy at certain quantum phase transitions known as Deconfined Quantum Critical Points, and determined the entropy's scaling behavior contrasted with the characterization of  classical Landau, Ginzburg, Wilson (LGW) framework types of phase transitions.

"This discovery will lead to a more general characterization of the critical behavior of novel quantum materials, and is a move closer towards actualization of application of quantum materials which play a vital role in propelling human advancement," said HKU's Zi Yang Meng.
