An artificial intelligence model developed by researchers at Dartmouth College can examine social media posts to detect mental disorders. The model is different from others in that it focuses on the emotions, not the specific content, of the social media posts being analyzed.
Looking at Reddit data back to 2011, they trained the model to label the emotions expressed in users' posts and mapped users' emotional transitions between posts, indicating how likely it was that a user went from one state to another. The model can identify emotional disorders, such as major depressive, anxiety, and bipolar disorders, by generating a user's emotional "fingerprint" and comparing it to the distinct patterns of emotional transitions exhibited by these disorders.
