Researchers at Austria's University of Vienna and Italy's National Research Council (CNR) and the Politecnico di Milano have demonstrated a quantum memristor on an integrated quantum processor operating on single photons in an effort to link artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
This quantum memristor behaves the same as a memristor (memory-resistor)—a fundamental building block of neuromorphic architectures—while acting on quantum states encoding and transmitting quantum information.
The researchers used single photons that propagate along waveguides laser-written on a glass substrate and are guided on a superposition of multiple paths.
Simulations indicate optical networks with a quantum memristor can be used to learn on both classical and quantum tasks.
Vienna's Michele Spagnolo said, "Unlocking the full potential of quantum resources within artificial intelligence is one of the greatest challenges of the current research in quantum physics and computer science."
