The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has a history of shaping emerging technologies. The agency—part of the U.S. Department of Defense—sponsored research that helped create everything from the internet and the personal computer to drones, GPS, and much more.
Currently, DARPA is responding to the expansion of cloud computing and other virtual networks by researching new methods for sharing data while lowering privacy and security risk. Tom Rondeau, program manager at DARPA, believes building trust through privacy-preserving techniques is key to democratic values.
"Being able to share information in a way that preserves privacy and security is foundational to democracy," Rondeau says.
