Boston's New CIO to Focus on Unlocking City Data
Santiago Garces said expanding Internet and computer access to underserved populations would be among his priorities as Boston's next chief information officer.

Boston's next chief information officer said he plans to improve residents' access to city data, expanding on tools designed to offer insight into spending trends and various city services.
Santiago Garces, who steps into the role on May 9, said he would build on the city's data analytics and open-data efforts. He replaces Alex Lawrence, who has served as interim CIO since November.
"Boston has been a pioneer and a leader in the analytics space and open data," Mr. Garces said. "One of the things that we focus on is trying to bring a story or being able to bring more context and perspective to what the underlying data is saying."
Mr. Garces, who is a native of Bogota, Colombia, also said he would work to expand internet and computer access to underserved populations.
