Meta researchers used artificial intelligence (AI) to develop concrete that it claims generates 40% less carbon emissions than standard concrete mixtures.
The new construction material is being used in its latest datacenter in DeKalb, IL.
The researchers used a dataset of 1,030 concrete mixtures to train an AI model to identify the best mixture for a particular use.
The AI can compare the mixtures to identify those with a minimum given strength and the lowest possible emissions.
The researchers performed laboratory tests on the five most promising mixtures.
However, Walter Kaufmann at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology said, "The emissions of the 'novel' concretes described in the paper essentially correspond to Swiss average concrete in terms of emissions today."
