The municipal government in Beijing, China, has granted permits to Baidu and Pony.ai to operate robotaxis without human drivers on open roads in the city.
The permits enable the companies to offer rides in autonomous vehicles to the general public within a 60-sq.-km (23-sq.-mi.) area in the Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone.
The rides will be offered by 10 of Baidu's autonomous vehicles and four of Pony.ai's, though the latter firm will continue to operate with safety supervisors in the front passenger seats, at least initially.
