The U.S. government has warned employers that artificial intelligence (AI) technology for screening new job candidates or tracking productivity could violate civil rights laws by discriminating against people with disabilities.
Guidance from the Justice Department and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission directs employers to be cautious in using popular AI tools intended to streamline the assessment of employees and job prospects.
Tools include resume scanners, employee monitoring software that ranks workers according to keystrokes, game-like online tests to rate job skills, and video interviewing software that measures speech patterns or facial expressions.
Officials said such technology could potentially filter out people with speech impediments, severe arthritis that slows typing, or other physical or mental handicaps.
Tools that automatically analyze workplace habits also can miss on-the-job modifications that help workers perform their jobs.
