Researchers from Japan's Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) have developed a 64-element millimeter-wave-band phased-array transceiver that transmits and receives data while receiving power at the same time.

Tokyo Tech's Atsushi Shirane said the transceiver has surmounted the limitations of short transmission distances and a fixed direction from which power can be received, and also is "the first device to achieve simultaneous reception of power and communication signals with beam steering using phase-shifting."

The prototype transceiver generated 1 milliwatt, and continued to produce 46% of its output at 4.5 meters (about 14 feet), even at a plus or minus 45-degree received angle.

Shirane said the goal is to use the device first as a batteryless 5G relay, and then to incorporate it within Internet of Things devices.
