AI Learns to Recognize Species of Splatted Mosquitoes

Artificial intelligence (AI) taught to identify the species of living and dead mosquitoes from images could help monitor the species most complicit in transmitting diseases.
Researchers at Malaysia's Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation captured 1,500 photos of yellow fever, Asian tiger, and southern house mosquitoes that landed on volunteers' hands, one right after they landed and another after being splatted.
The researchers then trained two different AIs to recognize mosquitoes on human skin; one AI was able to guess the correct species of mosquito about 80% of the time.
