A report from the cybersecurity firm SonicWall found that the number of "cryptojacking" attacks on financial companies jumped 30% to 66.7 million during the first half of 2022 compared with the same period last year.
These attacks involve hackers using malware to access the computer networks of banks and trading houses and taking advantage of their computing power to mine cryptocurrencies.
The report indicated that there were five times more cryptojacking attempts against the financial industry than the retail sector.
Said the report, "Unlike ransomware, which announces its presence and relies heavily on communication with victims, cryptojacking can succeed without the victim ever being aware of it."
