A drink-mixing machine dubbed BRILLO, short for Bartending Robot for Interactive Long-Lasting Operations can engage in conversation with customers. BRILLO is being developed by scientists at Italy's University of Naples Federico II (UNINA), who are using machine-learning algorithms to teach BRILLO to interact with customers, interpret the tone of conversation, and even ask appropriate questions or crack jokes.

Researchers trained an algorithm to study customers' face and speech patterns, picking up social cues to learn the interaction they would prefer having in real time. "After three or four interactions, the robot is able to start fine-tuning the profile of the user in order to have a better, more focused conversation," said UNINA's Silvia Rossi.
