New research suggests quantum computers may be unable to model molecules and tackle other challenges in chemistry as rapidly as researchers hoped. The California Institute of Technology's Garnet Chan and colleagues calculated the length of time for classical and quantum methods to determine the quantum states of iron-sulphur groups.

The researchers discovered that the power required to ascertain the initial guess alone could diminish quantum computing's exponential speed advantage. Moreover, nothing indicated that optimizing or modifying classical methods would not eliminate the advantage.
