French Bureaucrats: We Won't Be Enslaved by Robots
France’s top court says the consensus among scientists is that the ‘singularity’ is ‘a fantasy.’

France's highest administrative court dismissed the notion that artificial intelligence (AI) threatens humanity.
Last year, former French Prime Minister Jean Castex commissioned the Conseil d'État to advise on how to develop AI applications in public administration and mitigate their risks.
The court's analysis criticizes the idea of the singularity—a technological takeover—as a fabrication that the government should counter in its approach to AI.
"All the scientists that we talked to think that [singularity] is a fantasy, pure and simple, and it amounts to mere marketing," explained State Counsel Thierry Tuot, adding that other risks, like the use of AI-controlled military weaponry, are more pressing.
An anonymous European AI researcher nevertheless cautioned, "AGI [artificial general intelligence] is a scientific hypothesis to bear in mind, even if there is a lack of consensus amongst academic authorities."
