These Cute Robots Could Deliver Your Next Coffee

Hong Kong Polytechnic University's Kaye Chon said the pandemic-related exodus from the hospitality industry has contributed to an increase in the use of robots to provide various services.

Rice Robotics has rolled out three types of robots for use in hospitality and other industries: Rice, which features a delivery compartment to transport drinks and other items that is unlocked by the customer using a PIN code sent to their phone; Jasmine, a cleaning robot that disperses disinfectant through nozzles on its head; and Portal, which can make deliveries and guide people around with the help of a touch screen, two-way intercom, and streaming cameras.

However, there are challenges to the widespread use of robotics, including costs, with Rice charging $9,000 and up for its robots; the need to adapt spaces to accommodate robots; and the need for workers able to program the robots.
