Algorithms could be trained to monitor changes in the consciousness of critically ill patients in intensive care, according to a study by computer scientists at the Stevens Institute of Technology. Researchers built an algorithm to monitor feeds from heart rate, breathing rate, brain temperature, blood oxygen level, and other sensors.
A study of 239 patients with hemorrhages found that the algorithm could classify patients' states of consciousness as well as trained clinicians and nearly as well functional magnetic resonance imaging machines and other equipment.
