Robot Dog Contributes to AI Research
The University of Buffalo's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences recently acquired Yubie the robotic dog as a research platform to explore new frontiers in robotics, computer science, artificial intelligence, and other high-tech fields.

The University of Buffalo's (UB) Yubie, a robot dog with the brand name Spot the Agile Mobile Robot, is used as both for research and as an educational tool.
UB's Karthik Dantu said, "Every time we walk on campus, the amount of excitement it generates toward robotics is far beyond anything I can do by showing some slides or pictures. We would like to channel that to really excite anybody about AI [artificial intelligence] and robotics and other technologies that are coming."
This involves moving away from the controversy about the potential weaponization of robots and emphasizing the good that robots can do, from carrying heavy loads for troops and inspecting infrastructure to performing search-and-rescue missions and eventually serving as guide dogs and personal assistants.
UB's Dave Doermann explained, "These devices have narrow intelligence, so we can only design them to do specific things," adding "that's what people need to trust."
