Floodland, a recently released city-building strategy game, has a post-apocalyptic storyline in which players are tasked with rebuilding society following a catastrophic climate event.

Developed by Poland-based indie studio Vile Monarch, Floodland is one of only a few realistic games to be based on climate change.

Game designer Konstantinos Dimopoulos suggests climate change must be integrated realistically by punishing or rewarding players based on whether or not they make green choices.

However, Vile Monarch's Kacper Kwiatkowski said, "If a game relies too much on current events or social problems, [video-game players] tend to become defensive, like, 'This is meant to be entertainment. I don't want politics in my game'."

Still, oceanographer John Englander said, "Video games can be a better vehicle for education because you're interacting with it more, as opposed to watching a movie, which is more of a passive experience."
