The National Football League (NFL) has expanded its partnership with top research universities to gather data from on-field head impacts to inform injury reduction programs.
The universities of Florida, Georgia, Pittsburgh, and Vanderbilt University will join the effort this year, bringing the total number of participating institutions to eight.
Sensor-outfitted mouthguards will provide data about an impact's effects on the head, and supplement identical data collection underway at four NFL clubs.
"We hope that the information from this study will further our understanding of the nature and type of impacts to the head that occur during football practices and games," said the University of Pittsburgh's Anthony Kontos.
