Researchers at the University of Science and Technology of China have invented a contactless electrocardiogram (ECG) that infers electrical signals through artificial intelligence (AI) and millimeter-wave radar.

The researchers used an off-the-shelf millimeter-wave-radar instrument to detect cardiovascular movements in all three directions over time, then programmed an AI algorithm to deduce electrical activity from this information.

They performed 200 tests with 35 participants from ages 18 to 25, positioning the radar above their bodies during four physiological states to model common daily conditions.

The framework yielded a median timing error of less than 14 milliseconds and a median morphology accuracy of 90% versus standard ECG.
