Sound-Powered Underwater Camera Could Dramatically Boost Climate Monitoring

Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers used sound waves to power a wireless camera underwater, which could help to map the impact of climate change.

Sound waves traveling through water cause piezoelectric panels on the battery-free camera's housing to produce electricity that feeds into a supercapacitor, which powers the device.

The autonomous camera can capture high-resolution color photos even in low light, then transmit them to a receiver.

The researchers said the camera can run for weeks without human intervention.
