China Bans AI-Generated Media Without Watermarks

New regulations from China's Cyberspace Administration that go into effect Jan. 10, 2023, ban the creation of media using artificial intelligence without watermarks or other clear labels.
The regulations were issued in response to the rise of "deep synthesis" technology.
The commission indicated that the regulations are intended to "prevent and resolve security risks" and "promote the healthy development of in-depth synthetic services and improve the level of supervision capabilities."
The government will perform security assessments of all new deep synthesis products to ensure they comply with the regulations prior to release.
The commission added, "Services that provide functions such as intelligent dialogue, synthesized human voice, human face generation, and immersive realistic scenes that generate or significantly change information content, shall be marked prominently to avoid public confusion or misidentification."
