Google has started beta testing hosting of digital driver's licenses and state ID cards for its Wallet application on Android, which will be exclusive to Maryland.
The Google Support page says the U.S. Transportation Security Administration will accept the feature "at some supporting airports," with participating airports listed on the agency's website.
Marylanders must outfit their smartphones with Android 8.0 or higher, and be testers in the Google Play Service Public Beta Program; the phones must have the screen lock set, and Bluetooth and the Nearby Devices tool enabled.
After downloading digital ID support, a new ID Card entry will appear in the app.
Users must photograph both sides of their ID as well as a short video of themselves; Google will then send a screenshot to the ID issuer—most likely the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration—for verification.
