Google's management issued a "code red" in response to the release of OpenAI's ChatGPT and its potential to disrupt the tech industry. Although not without flaws, ChatGPT could pose a serious threat to Google's main search engine business.

Google has developed a potential rival chat bot, LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), but could be hesitant to roll it out because it would not serve as a suitable replacement for online search, given that it cannot deliver the digital ads that made up over 80% of Google's 2021 revenue.

"If Google gives you the perfect answer to each query, you won't click on any ads," says Amr Awadallah, founder and CEO of startup Vectara.

Industry experts say Google will have to choose between a search engine overhaul or making a full-fledged chat bot the face of its business.
