A team that included researchers at Canada's Dalhousie University developed an online portal of fish sound information and a catalogue of recordings, featuring data on 989 fish species found to produce active sounds.
The goal behind the FishSounds portal is to improve understanding of fish behaviors, track invasive species, and monitor the health of marine environments.
Dalhousie's Sarah Vela said, "FishSounds provides underwater acoustic researchers with a summary of everything the scientific community knows about whether a fish species makes noise, without requiring them to read through pages of text to find the answer."
A visualization has been added to the latest version of the website to map various trends, showing, for instance, how fish species near the equator are more talkative, as are those in the Atlantic compared to the Pacific.
The map will help identify gaps in research in particular regions.
