Assigning Workplaces in Synthetic Populations

A new technique unveiled by researchers at Japan's Shibaura Institute of Technology and Kansai University can assign workplaces to individuals in synthetic populations, computer-generated models that mimic real-world populations.

The researchers blended Origin-Destination-Industry (ODI) statistics with origin-destination data into a workplace assignment approach that is relevant for all cities, towns, and villages in Japan.

They applied the method to assigning workplaces to people in cities with more than 200,000 residents, and compared the results with complete ODI data.

Using the city of Takatsuki as an example, the researchers showed the technique could assign the correct cities as workplaces for 88.2% of the workforce.

They said these enhanced social simulations can be used to guide real-world decision-makers.
