Ecologists Deploy Drones to Monitor Deer Population
Wildlife experts in the U.K. are using drones to count the deer population of Ashdown Forest in East Sussex.

Ecologists are using airborne drones to monitor fallow deer populations in the U.K.'s Ashdown Forest.
The drones are equipped with cameras and thermal imaging sensors to spot and track deer from overhead, with the imagery fed to a mapping system.
Said wildlife consultant Ben Harrower, "We record the species, the age class — if we can tell from the imagery — and the sex of the deer. Then it creates this distribution and density map of the deer across the forest."
Wildlife experts say the information compiled by the drones will help to cull fallow deer populations and to reduce their impact on the region's biodiversity.
